Republican State Senator Acknowledges that the GOP is Enabling White Supremacy
On August 4, 2019, Nebraska State Senator John McCollister, who is a Republican, said, “the Republican Party is enabling white supremacy in our country.”
McCollister further stated: “As a lifelong Republican, it pains me to say this, but it’s the truth. I of course am not suggesting that all Republicans are white supremacists nor am I saying that the average Republican is even racist.”
The comments followed closely on the heels of a deadly mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, committed by a white nationalist whose manifesto made clear that he was targeting immigrants and Latinx people.
